Te Akau’s 2008/09 season was a brilliant season, especially for our owners! Te Akau trainer Mark Walker is an outstanding horseman and he again created new records and set new benchmarks of excellence! The highlights of the 2008/09 season were undoubtedly:

Mark Walker training 102 winners for our owners - this is a record for Mark and also for Te Akau Stables. This total is the third highest ever recorded in New Zealand and has seen Mark win his fourth Trainers’ Premiership in five years – 29 wins clear of the next stable.  Mark was named Dunstan Champion Trainer of the Year again in August 2009 - his fourth title in six years (pictured below with Dunstan Feeds' Chairman David Smith).

Mark Walker became the only trainer to win back to back Group 1 Kelt Capital Stakes
- this is an outstanding accomplishment. There have only been two $2 million races staged in New Zealand and Mark Walker has won them both with Princess Coup. Mark has now trained three Kelt winners, more than any other trainer. Princess Coup also became “New Zealand’s Leading Horse of All Time” by stakes won in New Zealand. Her career prize money of $4.23 million makes her Encosta de Lago’s highest stakes’ winner.

Te Akau was New Zealand's highest stakes' earning stable again in 2008/09
- with $3.71 million earned in New Zealand which is a stable and New Zealand record for domestic stakes’ earned.   Yet another record for the stable was also established in 2008/09 with Princess Coup breaking the $4.23 million mark in career prize money thus becoming the highest stakes' earning horse Te Akau has trained.

Mark Walker trained more Group & Listed winners than any other trainer – with 11 black type races won, we proudly congratulate the owners of:

Princess Coup
(Group 1 Kelt Capital Stakes & Group 1 Stoneybridge Stakes)
Tell A Tale
(Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas, Group 2 Hawkes Bay Guineas, Group 2 Avondale Guineas &
Listed Canterbury Stakes)
King’s Ransom
(Group 2 Wakefield Challenge Stakes & Listed Fairview Ford Slipper)
Te Akau Rose
(Group 2 Robin, Duke of Bedford Matamata Breeders' Stakes)
Rio Fortune
(Listed NZB Castletown Stakes)
Flying Fulton
(Listed Great Northern Foal Stakes)

Mark Walker has been New Zealand's Champion Trainer of the Year for four out of the last six years -
he has won four Trainers’ Premierships in the past five years, finishing second on the fifth occasion.  This shows a consistent record of excellence at the highest level.

Te Akau is committed to excellence and to bringing out the very best in your horse.  The 2009/10 season is one that we eagerly anticipate and we look forward to sharing the racing experiences and successes of it with you - welcome to Te Akau - it is a great team to be part of!

Te Akau Stud
(pictured below) provides a world class, 4000 acre environment for horses to be spelled, educated and pre-trained before they enter the rigours of the racing world. With stables now operating in both the North and South Island, Te Akau has the ability to place horses at all of the major racing carnivals in New Zealand and Australia.
The Matamata stable is ideally located in the heartland of New Zealand training establishments at Matamata. For many years our Matamata stable has been an outstanding source of winners.  Our South Island stable is situated at the Rangiora racecourse and is a purpose-built state of the art complex.

We pride ourselves on our high level of communication with owners and clients of both the stable and the stud. Te Akau Racing Stables' owners have chosen a wonderful opportunity to become involved in racehorse ownership in the knowledge that their investment is in the care of totally professional management and staff. It’s easy to be part of the team, contact us now:
